8th Overall Kitesurf Tour Europe

It’s been an amazing year for me, I’ve had some great opportunities to travel to some sick kitesurf and surf spots around Europe with the KTE.  The 3rd and final stop of the tour was in Saint Gilles Croix de Vie – this little surfing town is on the west coast of France about an hour from Nantes.  We decided to make a road-trip out of this so I got my van packed and prepared and picked my good friends up, Holly Kennedy and Ben Todd.

The road trip started off with me driving from my house in Liverpool direct to meet Ben on Anglesey at his amazing home spot in Rhosneigr.  It was awesome, we scored two epic days of strong south westerly winds and massive swell – this place is probs one of my favourite spots in the UK.   We then headed south to catch our ferry from Portsmouth and made a little detour to collect Holly in Southampton.  So the road trip started, we went to the ferry port an caught the overnight ferry to Le Havre.  After a smooth ferry crossing we arrived the following morning at around 6am and we took a 5 hour drive up to Saint Gilles.

On the first day of the comp we had the skippers meeting at 7am – this was pretty heavy as I’m not use to getting up this early but all was good because the wind was going to be coming in early so we made the most of it!  The first heat went pretty good!  I progressed through pretty easily and ended up meeting 3rd ranked rider on the tour Tijn Van Esch.  It started off well but I managed to crash my kite for about 4 minutes during the heat :O it was a bit annoying!  So this meant I got knocked out in the singles and had to make my way up through the doubles.  This was ok but a bit frustrating because I had a good start to this heat!

The days following day 1 of the comp there was quite a big lull with the wind so we decide to grab our surf boards and hit the epic surf that was right in front of us.  It was an unreal opportunity as I have never surfed properly in Europe before and I was stoked to get out as I had brought my new North XSurf 5’’11 with me.  I was pretty eager to see if it worked well in the surf and I was well impressed by it – it has quit a lot of volume and is pretty buoyant, I am defo going to be taking it to Aussie this winter!  I also tried it with the kite a couple of times after this and it was sick!  Seems like the perfect board for me being able to surf and kitesurf on – it means I can take a one board quiver away with me when I travel :)   We kept getting epic surf everyday with no wind, it was turning into the perfect surfing Trip! I will definitely be going back in the future!!

So finally on the last day we got a little bit of wind, enough for the 14m so we managed to finish some more of the double elimination.  I felt like I rode a lot better this day; I even managed to do a Front Mobe To Blind – I hadn’t done this for over a year in competition.   I passed through two heats; the first one was against Mikael Hyrylainen from Finland and then Bram Bast from Holland.  I got a couple of good tricks in the heats including switch back mobe and a massive indy 3 off the kicker out the back, the waves where going off making perfect kickers to throw some sick wakestyle off them -It reminded me of being back at the cable with a perfect kicker to hit.

So I progressed and met up with fellow North team rider Stefan Spiessberger from Austria in my final heat.  This was going to be a difficult one as Stefan is shredding and has improved so much this year.  He is known as the techy kid on the tour as he can do a lot of new wakestyle tricks like the front blind mobe to heal side and the backmobe 5.  Every stop on the European tour this year I have came up against Stefan and he has knocked me out so I wanted to give him a run for his money this time!  I probably had one of my best heats of the comp, I was stoked to land a front mobe to blind!  Apparently it was a very close heat, Stefan progressed and I later found out that my front mobe to blind was judged to be outside the area so maybe if this would have been inside it could have been a different story.  I was very stoked that Stefan landed a front blind mobe to heal in our heat, it was a sick one as well, so respect for that! I took 9th place overall for the event meaning with my average for the overall result i jumped down to 8th position :P

I am really happy with my 8th position overall this year, and stoked to be able to do the whole tour with help from my sponsors North Kiteboarding, Ion, Airbound Apparel and Smuggling Duds!  And I want to say a big thanks to the organisers and the crew from the European Tour, Thilo and Nills thanks guys!

I’m off to Aussi next week with my twin bro for the winter so keep posted for some new vids an pics, it’s going to be an epic trip!! :p

Holly Kennedy: 2nd place at KTE France

We’re alway stoked to see emails from Holly in our inbox on Monday mornings, because it’s always positive:

Hey Guys,
Hope all is good!
The last 2 weeks I have been in France for the KTE. Had some really nice sessions there and the comp went very well!
In the singles I won all my heats up to the final where I faced Asia Litwin. The heat was pretty close, I came 2nd!
Super happy! I was riding my 9m Vegas, however the conditions were tough with a alot of tidal current. Still I managed to get some good tricks down in my heats :)
Sadly there was not enough wind to finish the doubles!
This was my first European event and I was very pleased with the whole organisation of the event and of course my podium result.
Talk soon,
Thank You ,
Holly :)
